What a private driver in Kyushu actually costs

Updated 2 September 2026

In short

Full-day private car charters from Fukuoka are listed at roughly US$270–490 per vehicle for eight to ten hours. If you have been quoted around $1,000 a day, that is two to four times the marketplace price — ask what is included before you assume it is a rip-off, and before you assume it isn't.

The listed prices

These are the prices the sellers themselves publish, checked on 2 September 2026. They are per vehicle, not per person, and the vehicle size changes with your group.

DepartureDurationListed price
Fukuoka — customisable day charter10 h (8 h if pick-up and drop-off differ)from US$269.29
Fukuoka — temples / city day charter2–10 hfrom US$272.69
Fukuoka — Takachiho Gorge full day10 hUS$383.59
Fukuoka — van or coach, custom route7–10 hfrom US$485.35
Kumamoto — day charter (incl. Takachiho)9 hUS$327.99
Beppu — Beppu / Yufuin / Oita1, 3 or 6 hfrom US$145.79

Overtime beyond the booked hours is commonly listed at ¥5,000 per hour for vehicles up to ten seats and ¥10,000 per hour above that. Pick-ups outside the listed city usually add ¥3,000–10,000.

So a full day, one vehicle, up to about six people: roughly US$270–490. Two days: roughly US$540–970.

If you have been quoted $2,000 for two days

That is two to four times the listed range. It is not automatically a bad quote — a direct operator quote can legitimately include things the marketplace listing does not — but you should be able to name what those things are. Ask:

A quote that cannot answer those is not expensive. It is vague.

The better question: do you need one at all?

This is where the money actually is. A driver is not worth it because a place is remote. It is worth it because of frequency.

DestinationPublic transport, per dayReservation
Takachiho, from Kumamoto2 busesRequired
Takachiho, from Hakata4 busesRequired
Kurokawa Onsen, from Fukuoka3 busesRequired, all services
Yufuin, from Fukuoka (highway bus)14 busesRequired
Beppu, from Hakata (Ltd Exp Sonic)about 30 trainsNot required

Read that table as a decision rule rather than a list.

Two to four departures a day is where a driver starts to pay. Not because the bus is bad, but because missing one costs you three hours, and because chaining two such places in a single day is close to impossible on a timetable.

Yufuin and Beppu are the opposite case. Fourteen buses and thirty trains: a driver buys you comfort there, not access. If your whole itinerary is Fukuoka, Yufuin and Beppu, you are paying several hundred dollars to avoid a bus you could book on your phone.

The pattern behind the quotes

Look back at the listed prices and one thing lines up: the Takachiho day tour from Fukuoka is US$383.59, well above the US$269 baseline for a customisable Fukuoka day charter. Sellers price by driving hours, and Takachiho is about three and a quarter hours each way by road from Fukuoka. A "day trip" there is mostly the day, and mostly the trip.

Which is the same reason the bus only goes four times.

What this page does not tell you

Rates from Japanese taxi companies for hourly sightseeing charters booked directly. Several operators publish these, but we could not confirm a current figure from a source we can cite, so the numbers above are marketplace listings only — what Klook shows, on the date shown. KKday's charter pages would not render their prices for us, so nothing from KKday is quoted here. Prices are per vehicle and move with season and demand; treat them as a range to check a quote against, not as a price you will be offered.
